TOPEKA, Kansas -- Andrew E. Gehrt, Topeka, Kansas, 85, joined his Lord and Savior on November 5, 2006, Andrew was born July 5, 1921 in Villa Alba, Argentina, South America. He was the son of Pastor Henry M. Gehrt and Anna (nee Knell) Gehrt. He was baptized on July 11, 1921 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Central Pampas area of Argentina, by Reverend F.A. Guenther. His family returned to the United States and settled in McFarland, Kansas in 1927. Andrew was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, McFarland, Kansas, by Reverend William Meyer on May 14, 1935. He attended school in Alma, Kansas. Andrew lived in McFarland. He served in the United States Army Infantry and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He moved to Topeka in 1946 and worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant for 38 years. Andrew was married to Evelyn Dorothy Schulz on June 8, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Topeka. Andrew was active in his church as an elder, trustee, and served on the Board of Education. He was also a trustee at Topeka Lutheran School. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with family and friends.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Albert Gehrt, of Alma, and Elmer Gehrt of Topeka. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Topeka; two brothers, Ted Gehrt of Topeka and Otto Gehrt of Hutchinson, Kansas. Andrew is also survived by three children; a son, Matthew and his wife Debbie; daughter, Joanna Bradshaw and her husband James, all of Topeka; and a daughter, Beth Wilhelm and her husband David, of Hardy, Iowa. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore, Topeka. Christian burial will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Andrew will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 901 SW Fillmore, Topeka, Kansas 66606 or Topeka Lutheran School, 701 SW Roosevelt, Topeka, Kansas 66606 or the charity of the donor's choice.
