Darrell L. Sowers died Thursday, October 9, 2003, at his home in Cresco of natural causes. He was 72 years of age. Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday, October 13, 2003 at the United Methodist Church, with burial in New Oregon Cemetery, both in Cresco. Pastor Lewis Flanigan will preside. Mary Ellen Turnmire is the organist, with Pam Daley singing, “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art”, with the congregation singing, “All Creatures Great and Small”. Casket bearers will be Jerry Knoll, Willie Howard, Ray Reasland, Don Sowers, Doug Sowers, Brad Sovereign and Boston Nesteby.

Darrell Lee Sowers was born on January 3, 1931, near Sumner, Iowa , the son of Kenneth Monroe and Marjorie (Treloar) Sowers. He attended the country school until the 8th grade, then went to Sumner High School, from which he graduated. Darrell received his Biology and Physical Education Degrees from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He entered the Army on August 7, 1953 and served until June 25, 1955 during the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Sgt(T). Darrell was united in marriage to Janice Knoll on June 1, 1957, at Kanawha, Iowa. Darrell taught school at Rockwell-Swaledale for thirteen years, before coming to Cresco. He taught a science curriculum at Crestwood High School until his retirement in 1990. He also taught a summer science program at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. Darrell was an enthusiastic teacher, an avid sports fan, and a stamp collector. After retirement, he continued to present programs to students that had a learning message regarding chemicals.

He is survived by his wife, Janice, four children: Arlene Wright of Waterloo, IA, Dee, and her husband, Rick Sovereign of Cresco, IA, Brian of Marshalltown, IA, and Kay, and her husband, Larry Core of Virginia Beach, VA; nine grandchildren: Jonathan and Jeremy Wright, Casi, Brad, and Bethany Sovereign, Boston Nesteby, Whitney, Austin, and Joshua Sowers; two brothers: Doug (Marian) Sowers of Fredericksburg, IA and Don (Marlys) Sowers of Postville, IA, and two sisters: Margaret (Willie) Howard of Sumner, IA and Mernie (Ray) Reasland of Webster City, IA. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Dylan Sowers and a son-in-law, Bob Wright.
