COULTER, IA — Lewis Johnson, 78, of Coulter, died Saturday morning (July 28, 2007) at the Franklin Prairie Apartments in Hampton. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer, with a private family burial at a later date. Friends may call at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Lewis was born on Aug. 25, 1928, to J.L. Johnson and Annie Fekkers Johnson. Lewis was a life-long resident of Franklin County, growing up in rural route Alexander, Latimer and Sheffield. He attended school in Alexander and Sheffield. Lewis married Betty Blanchard, on Sept. 28, 1946, in Austin, Minn. To this union four children were born, Jane Marie, Jim (Michelle) Johnson, Nancy (Keith) Freie, and Vicki (Paul) Sondag. He worked 30 years for the Rock Island Railroad before retiring. Lewis and Betty lived 60 years in the Alexander and Sheffield areas, 40 of those years in Coulter. Lewis was a hard worker. Sometimes working two jobs to take care of his family. He never complained once. Lewis loved his family and was so proud of his children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. He will deeply be missed by his family.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Betty, of 60 years; three children, Jim of Golden Valley, Ariz., Nancy of Latimer, and Vicki of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren, Joseph Johnson, Dan Freie, Erin Nolton, Rochelle Freie, Rachel Manders, Steven Anderson, and Derek Sondag; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Petersen, of Latimer; one brother, Dale (Marian) Johnson, of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Jane Marie; three brothers, Bernie, Harold, and Jerry; four sisters, Carrie Igou, Ruth Schaefer, Lucille Pergande and Eileen Farrer. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
