THORNTON, Iowa — Lloyd W. Hughes, 95, died Tuesday (Oct. 21, 2008) at Cameron, Mo. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey. Burial will follow the services in the Meservey Cemetery.

Lloyd was born May 24, 1913, at Canton, S.D., to Hugh and Cora (Houghton) Hughes. He moved with his parents and older brothers, Hugh, Ed and George to a farm in Chickasaw County, Iowa, in 1916. His family lived on various farms near Charles City, Nashua, Plainfield, Horton and Bremer, Iowa. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1930 and began farming. On May 5, 1938, Lloyd married Gladys Remley in Clarksville, and they farmed near Bremer. In 1943, they bought a farm near Marshalltown. While living there, Lloyd began working for Marshall Canning Co. where his trucking career began. In 1953, they moved to an acreage south of Thornton. He drove his truck until 1972 when he began a career as an electrician until his retirement in 1994. He was very particular about his work and his many area customers were his friends. Lloyd and Gladys celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1998. From 1982 until 2002, Lloyd spent his winters in LaFeria, Texas, and summers in Iowa. In 2002 he moved to an apartment in Cameron, Mo., until 2008 when declining health required he move to a nursing home. Lloyd was active in the United Methodist churches in Meservey and LaFeria, Texas, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, usher, sound technician and contributed in a variety of other areas. He was named “Volunteer of the Year” in the LaFeria church in 1997 where he completed extensive electrical projects.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, in 1998; parents and brothers. Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn Fischer and son-in-law, Don, 27443 State Highway Y, Winston, MO 64689; three grandsons, Doug (Shelly) Fischer, Parkersburg, Matt (Andrea) Fischer, St. Joseph, Mo., and Michael (Megan) Fischer, Olathe, Kan.; five great-grandchildren, Cindy, Lindsey and Bret Fischer, Parkersburg, and Ella and Kate Fischer, St. Joseph, Mo., as well as nieces, nephews and many friends.
