December 27, 2005Albert Penning, age 90, of Aplington, Iowa, was born on February 27, 1915, on a farm one mile north of Austinville, Iowa the son of Klaas J. and Sophie (Maifeld) Penning. He received his education from a rural country school near his home through the 4th grade and graduated from the Ackley High School in 1933. On May 8, 1937, Albert was united in marriage with Elizabeth Stubbe at Kanawha, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm where he was raised. To this union two children Sidney and Vivian were born. Along with farming the family farm, Albert ran a custom silo filling business for over 30 years. Elizabeth passed away on July 21, 1948. Albert married Elsie Disney on September 12, 1952, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They lived on the farm until 1974, when they moved to Aplington. He always enjoyed being in the outdoors and spending time on the farm after retirement. Albert helped organize the Farm Bureau Service Company in Butler County and was on the Board of Directors for 30 years. He was on the original F.S. Board of Directors in Bloomington, Illinois and had served on the local Farm Bureau Board.
Albert moved into the assisted living at the Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington, Iowa, in 2001. He died on Monday, December 12, 2005, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington of natural causes. He was preceded in death by two wives, Elizabeth Penning on July 21, 1948, and Elsie Penning on May 7, 1992; his parents; six sisters, Sophie Jansonius, Mame Lupkes, Lena Janssen, Augusta Penning, Augusta Betten and Hattie Rotgers; and five brothers, Bill, John, Henry, Andrew and Klaus. Albert is survived by one son, Sidney (Connie) Penning of Aplington, Iowa; one daughter, Vivian (Ralph) Mohwinkle of Aplington, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jody (Rick) Thies, Jeff (Kerri) Mohwinkle, Anita (David) Osman and Kristy Penning; and seven great grandchildren, Nicole & Brandon Thies, Jonathon, Kaitlyn, Kasidy & Kinsey Mohwinkle and Elise Osman. Funeral Services were at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Iowa. Rev. Greg Smith officiated the services. The organist was Linda Birley, and the congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “Silent Night” and “How Great Thou Art.” The Honorary Casketbearers were Dwain Betten, Arlen Kromminga, Dennis Meyer and Fred Bolhuis. The Casketbearers were Jeff Mohwinkle, Rick Thies, David Osman, Dennis Rotgers, Jim Geerdes and Calvin Jansonius. Interment was at the Oak Wood Cemetery in Ackley, Iowa. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington were in charge of the arrangements. Memorials maybe directed to the family.
