Mason City (Iowa) Globe GazetteCLEAR LAKE — Roger L. Best, 62, of 10153 Grouse Ave., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Jan. 21, 1999) at his home after losing his battle with cancer over the past year. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and begins at 9 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Monday and one hour before services on Tuesday at the church. The family suggests memorials to the Roger L. Best Memorial Fund.
Roger LeRoy Best was born June 25, 1936 at the family's rural Belmond home. He was the youngest of four children of Ray C. and Ella (Kurtz) Best. When he was nine-years-old, the family moved to the farm near Burchinal. He attended rural school and Clear Lake High School, graduating in 1954. On Jan. 20, 1956, he married JoAnn Lenning at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa. They have one daughter, Kathy Ann. They farmed all their married life together, raising grain and livestock. Roger also worked at several "second jobs" including Allied Mills, Sinclair Chemicals and American Crystal Sugar. His hobbies were playing "500" and also enjoyed going to auctions and visiting with his many friends. He was a member of the Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau and Mt. Vernon Township DD Trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Best, of Clear Lake; daughter, Kathy Sinnwell and her husband, Dave, of Mason City; his brother, Don Best and his wife, Mary, of Rockwell; sister, Dorothy Scheffel and her husband, Ed, of Mason City; nephews Bob and Dennis Dawson; nieces Diane Cornick and Lori Beatty; great-nephews, Kiefer and Kaleb Cornick. He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Dale Best; sister, Velma Dawson and her husband, Earl Dawson.
