VIRGINIA L. MCVICKER BURRIS, 96

Virginia L. Burris, age 96, of Marshalltown, passed away Monday, December 7, 2009, at Villa Del Sol Nursing Center, Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, December 11, 2009, at Pursel Davis Funeral Home. Interment followed in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.

Virginia was born June 30, 1913, the daughter of Clarence and Viola (Brown) McVicker in Clarion, Iowa. She was raised in Clarion and later graduated from Clear Lake High in Clear Lake Iowa. She took nurses training in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa specializing in Hydro care. She applied her training to her jobs at the State Hospital in Clarinda and Norfolk, Nebraska. In 1938 she returned to Des Moines, and worked for Younkers.

In 1939 she married Merlyn Burris, from Mason City at the Little Brown Church. The couple moved to Marshalltown and later lived in LeGrand for 17 years. In 1974 the couple moved to the Ozarks and returned to Marshalltown in 1985. The past one and half years she has resided at Villa Del Sol Nursing Center. Virginia will be missed by her daughter, Vicky (Ronald) Thorp of Ames, son, David L. (Karlene) Burns of Rapid City, South Dakota; three grandchildren. Brad Burris of Denver Co., Jennifer (Rick) Hindman of Johnston, Iowa, Jamie (Eldon) Whitaker of Colo, Iowa and three great grand-children. In eternal life she joins her husband, Merlyn who died in 1995; grandson, Adam Burris; three sisters and one brother. Virginia was the oldest surviving member of the First Congregational Church, Marshalltown.
