August 14, 1866 -- July 12, 1945
The burial of Simon Tinklenberg occurred at Hillside Cemetery west of Edgerton [Minnesota] on Monday afternoon of this week, death having summoned him at Orange City [Iowa] last week Thursday at the Doornink Hospital after an illness of about nine months with heart and kidney aliments. Funeral services were held at the Christian Reformed Church at Orange City in the forenoon, after which a large number of relatives and friends drove to Edgerton for the interment.
Simon Tinklenberg was born in the Providence of North Holland, The Netherlands, on August 14, 1866 and was therefore nearly seventy nine years of age when called by death. As a boy of three years, he came to the United State with his people, locating first at Platte, South Dakota. There he assisted his father in farming, attended school and later taught in rural schools. At the age of 21 years he went to Orange City. There he was married to Maggie Synhorst, and one son, Leonard, was born to them. His wife died eighteen months after their marriage. Later he married Jennie Ver Steeg, and their children included Charley, Dick, Ed, Nelson, Teunis, Martha, (Mrs. John Ten Cate) and Clarence. Mrs. Tinklenberg passed away December 24, 1924. Charley and Teunis also preceded their father in death. All the living children except Clarence reside in this territory. He is a painter at Sheldon.
The deceased and his family resided for a time at Pella and in Wright County, Iowa, coming to Edgerton in 1911. In 1926, Mr. Tinklenberg was married to Mrs. Kate Oordt, and they resided thereafter at Orange City. She still survives. A large number of relatives and friends from this community attended the funeral at Orange City, and many from that locality were here to attend the burial. The deceased leaves the children previously mentioned, also twenty-seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two brothers and a host of other relatives. Eight grandsons have been serving in the army. The deceased was an exceptionally active and enterprising man. He operated a carpenter shop and construction business at Orange City and Pella, farmed in Wright County, and conducted a block and tile factory, a farm and livestock business in this community. He was also active in the Farmers' elevator and store, and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher in the Christian Reformed Church in Leota.
