Fort Dodge Messenger, IowaEAGLE GROVE, IA - Claude "Bill" Smith, 85, of Eagle Grove, died Thursday, February 25, 2010 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center in Webster City, with Rev. Scott Boone officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post #191 of Webster City. Private family burial will be held at the Calvary Cemetery in Webster City. Visitation will be held at Fosters from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday and prior to the funeral service on Saturday.
Claude Calvin Smith, son of Claude S. and Marie Christenson Smith was born on July 19, 1924 in Hamilton County, Iowa. He received his education and graduated from the Webster City Lincoln High School in 1941. During WWII, he honorably served in the United States Navy, stationed in the Atlantic, European and Pacific theatres of action. On February 22, 1946, he married Clara Irene Coddington in Eagle Grove, Iowa. The couple resided in Webster City. Bill was employed at Naden Industries for over 43 years as Shop Foreman, until his retirement in 1989. In 1997, he and Clara moved to Eagle Grove. Clara died on July 28, 2004.
Survivors include his sons, Michael (Linda) Smith of Norwalk, Jeffrey (Lynn) Smith of Eagle Grove; daughter, Vicki (Randy) Nelson of Paynesville, MN; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and his brother, Wayne Smith of Panquitch, UT. In addition to his wife Clara, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul, Ralph and Francis Smith; sisters, Estaline Kist, Pauline Rapp, Dorothy Hilpipre, Fern Austin; and his great grandson, Spencer Waldeier.
Bill was a member of the American Legion Post #191 and the Moose Family Center both in Webster City. He enjoyed golfing, BINGO, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He loved his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all of his friends. Bill especially missed his loving wife of 59 years, Clara.
