Longtime Music Professor At Covenant College
Ira David Halvorsen, 84, died on Friday, March 9, 2007. Born in Chambers, Ne., March 18, 1922, he served in the Army Air Force during World War II. After receiving his master of music degree from Eastman School of Music and his seminary degree from Grace Theology Seminary in Indiana, he served for four years as a missionary in France. Later, he was a professor of music at Covenant College. Following this, he continued to teach piano students, write music and pursue his own piano studies. His first wife, Norma, died in 1968. He later married Dorothy Dunton, who died in 1995. He is survived by two sons, David Halvorsen, of Chattanooga, and Peter Halvorsen, of Harrisburg, Pa.; and his brother, Arlen Halvorsen of Salem, Or. He has three grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter. The family will receive friends at a memorial service to be held at St. Elmo Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 16 at 4 p.m. Arrangements are by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Directors.
