Arlin Meyer Halvorsen
January 29, 1914 - February 5, 2010

SALEM, OR - Arlin Halvorsen was born in Hobart, Oklahoma to Ira and Hattie (Howland) Halvorsen and passed away at his residence at Meadow Creek Village in Salem on February 5, 2010, at the age of 96. His siblings, Philip Halvorsen, Glenice Blough and David Halvorsen, all preceded him in death. He married Stella Jane Dahlin on August 17, 1938 and she preceded him to heaven in 1999. He is survived by two daughters, Marlene (Dusty) Rhodes of Salem and Kathi (Jim) Couture of Wheaton, Ill.; 5 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He served in the military as a Chaplain in the Army on the front lines in Europe between 1943 and 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries in action, as well as the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and Oak Leaf Cluster to the Silver Star for meritorious service and gallantry in action. He graduated from high school in Goldfield, Iowa and attended Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska. He graduated from Northwestern College in Minneapolis and received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Western Conservative Baptist Theological Seminary. During his career, he served as a pastor in 12 churches over a 58 year period, including First Baptist Church in Salem from 1958-1964; Salem Heights Baptist Church from 1978-1982 and Oretown (Oregon) Bible Church from 1982-1987 and as interim pastor at Bethel Baptist Church in Aumsville in 1988. In addition, he served as a chaplain in various nursing homes in the Salem area from 1987-1993 under the auspices of Nursing Home Ministries, Inc. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fruitland Community Church, 813 63rd Ave. N.E., Salem, Ore. 97301 or to the Union Gospel Mission 345 Commerical St. N.E., Salem, Ore. 97301 A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010, at the Fruitland Community Church. Private services were held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
