A Pioneer Gone

David G. Patterson was born in Berks Garden, Va., Aug. 21, 1837, moved to Jones county, Iowa, with his father in 1854; moved from there to Delaware county in 1855, and was married to Lucy E. Day at Whittemore on May 22d, 1868. Mr. and Mrs. Patterson moved to Butler county in 1869, and after a residence of six years there came to Wright county and settled on the farm which for the past thirty years has been his home. Mr. Patterson was the father of nine children, two of whom died in infancy; the remaining seven, with their mother, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father, a true and devoted husband.

Coming to this county when the country was yet new, learning by experience many of the difficulties that the pioneer must overcome in building up a home in such a country. But perseverance wins, and Mr. Patterson died with a clear title to as fine a farm as Wright county affords. He lived to see his family nearly all grown up, some of them settled in homes of their own. He was a graduate of Mt. Vernon college, and in his earlier days a teacher in the public schools of this and other counties. He was nearly a lifelong member of the Methodist church, and he was truly a religious man; his life corresponded with his religion and a promise made by him was faithfully kept. The deceased was a patient sufferer for many years, but during the past few months his health failed rapidly and the attending physician warned the family that the worst might be expected at any time, but we are never prepared for the death of our loved ones. Mr. Patterson passed away on the morning of Feb. 14th, the immediate cause of his death being heart failure. He has left to the heart-broken wife and children the legacy of a spotless character and the record of a well spent life. His kindly counsels will be missed, not only in the home, but by his large circle of friends and acquaintances.

The funeral service was held from the M.E. church of Rowan, Friday, Rev. Hild preaching the sermon, assisted by Rev. Chambers. Interment was in the Rowan cemetery. Mrs. Frank Wood of Fox Home, Minn., daughter of the deceased, arrived in time for the funeral. William Patterson of LuVerne, was also in attendance. Another brother, James, of Buffalo Center, did not arrive until Saturday, owing to the snow blockade.
