ALDEN - W. James (Jim) Peterson, 80, of Hampton, formerly of Alden, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton. Memorial services were Thursday, Jan. 8, at the United Methodist Church in Popejoy with Rev. Bob Miller officiating.

Jim was born June 1, 1923, in Alden to Oscar and Mae (Donelson) Peterson. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1940. Jim served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943-46. On Dec. 22, 1945, he was united in marriage to Dorothy (Dottie) Nassen. Jim was a farmer in the Alden area. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dottie of Alden; one son, Dennis Peterson of Mount Vernon; one daughter, Kaye Surls of Iowa City; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Nellie White of Alden and Karen Classon and husband Gary of Hiawatha; and one brother, Merle Peterson and wife Beverly of Alden. Surls Funeral Home of Alden was in charge of arrangements.
