ALDEN - Joanne Maxine Nelson, 73, of Alden, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Services will be Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alden with burial in the Alden Cemetery. Rev. Rick Layman will officiate.
Joanne was born Aug. 22, 1929, in Westphalia, Kan. to Clarence and Cecille Brown Mardick. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1946. On March 7, 1948, she married Dennis "Bud" Nelson at the Methodist Parsonage in Alden. She worked at the Popejoy School for many years and was a clerk and later Postmaster at the Alden Post Office for 17 years. She enjoyed working with children and at the Post Office because she enjoyed people. She was a member of the Alden Study Club, Women's Legion Auxiliary, the National League of Postmasters for several years and worked with the Alden Development and the Golf Course Committees.
She is survived by her husband, Bud; three sons, Gary and wife Adella of DeSota, Larry and wife Sue of Marengo and Mick and wife Jody, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Velma Nelson of Windom, Minn. and Shirla Behrens of Unionville, Mo.; a brother Melvin Mardick of Longmont, Colo.; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Keith and Gerald Mardick. Surls Funeral Home of Alden was in charge of arrangements.
