Alvin S. Larson, 84, Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Mr. Larson was born May 31, 1918, in Badger, Iowa, where he grew up and attended school. He drove truck for his family's trucking firm. He married Emma M. Pahnke May 22, 1942, in Badger. They moved near Dexter, Minn., in 1952, where they farmed. In 1966, they moved to Laredo, Texas, to work as missionaries. They moved to White Earth, Minn., in 1968 to continue their missionary work. From 1975-97 he served as a pastor in various churches in Minnesota and Iowa. He severed as visitation pastor for Faith Free Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. He also served as director of Hauge Foreign Missions.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, A. David (Joanne), Santa Anna, Calif., James (Ruth), El Cajon, Calif., Rev. Paul (Dawn), Detroit Lakes; two daughters, Marlene Unverzagt, Detroit Lakes, Mary (Don) Greven, Newark, Ill.; three brothers, Irving (Gloria), Badger, Duane (Barbara), Goldfield, Iowa, Howard (Lynda), Papillion, Neb.; two sisters, Alenor (Bud) Askelson, Ellen Jane Lemberg, both Badger; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Sunday from 4-8, with a prayer service a 7, in West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, and one hour before the funeral in the church. Funeral: Monday at 11 in Faith Free Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Burial: Elbow Lake (Minn.) Lutheran Cemetery.
