DODGE CENTER, MN -- Burnette Jean Skogen (Peterson) passed away at Fairview Nursing Home in Dodge Center on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009. She was 85. Burnette was born on Dec. 29, 1923, to Harry and Julia Peterson in Vincent, Iowa. She graduated from Eagle Grove (Iowa) High School and went on to graduate from Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. From there, she attended Teachers College in Austin and received her teaching certificate. She married Gerald Skogen on July 27, 1946, and they lived in the rural Kasson area until moving to the city of Kasson. Her husband (Gerald) died in November 1998. Burnette taught country school for a few years in the Pine Island area, then became a full-time mother and housewife. Later in life, she was a nurses aid at Methodist Hospital and a pre-school teacher in Kasson. She enjoyed playing the piano, singing gospel hymns, reading her Bible daily, crocheting, talking and laughing over a cup of coffee, cooking and baking.

Burnette is survived by nine children, Daniel (Susan) of Zumbro Falls, David (Jo Lynn) of Oronoco, Rochelle Lurken of Rochester, Julie Skogen of Zumbrota, Lynette Musolf of Rochester, Timothy (Sonia) of Dodge Center, Patricia Skogen of Rochester, Jo Ellen (David) Krieger of Seattle and Craig (Jean) of Atlanta; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian (Donald) Aarsvold of Kasson and Mary Jo Estes (Earl) of Cary, N.C.; and two brothers, Harold (Pearl) Peterson of Bella Vista, Ark., and James (Mary Jo) Peterson of Byron. A brother, Harry (Vivian) Peterson Jr., preceded her in death in 2007.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, at South Zumbro Lutheran Church, 4830 120th Ave. S.W., Kasson. Pastor Mark Schwartz will officiate. Burial will be in South Zumbro Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials are preferred to the church. Dibble Funeral Home, Kasson.
