Virginia O. (Abels) Huffman, 85, a resident of Leavenworth, Washington for the last 31 years, passed away Monday, December 8, 2008, at Cashmere, WA. She was born on April 5, 1923, to George and Maude Abels in Popejoy , IA. She attended school in Clearfield, IA, where she received her early education, graduating in 1940. Virginia attended Marysville, MO State Teachers College, where she received her Teachers Certificate. Virginia then taught in Iowa for four years. On September 12, 1944, she married Mac Huffman in Corpus Christie, TX, where he graduated from the Naval Air Station as a pilot. They lived in Florida and California, while he received additional training. In 1945, after Mac was transferred oversees, Virginia moved to Washington, where she taught Elementary School. After three years, Virginia gave up teaching to raise her children, Brad and Shelley. Virginia was very active in Civic Affairs, joining the Pamela Asmondson Orthopedic Guild and the P.T.A. She served as secretary of the Silver Spray Rebeccas, was a member of the Randle Garden Club, the Ladies Social Club and the United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included gardening, landscaping, sewing, knitting, crocheting, home decorating and music. Mac and Virginia moved to Leavenworth in 1977, where she was employed in the business office of the Leavenworth Fruit Company. After retiring in 1988, her time was spent volunteering at the Chamber of Commerce, the blood bank and Osborn Elementary School. Traveling in the RV was a pleasant pasttime, spending winters in Arizona and visiting friends and family in the mid-West and points in-between.

She is survived by her husband, Mac Huffman of Leavenworth; son, Brad Huffman of Gig Harbor and Trece Edwardsen and family of Gig Harbor; daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Mark Kittock of Olympia; brother, Duane Abels of Vancouver, WA; and a granddaughter, Haley Huffman of Gig Harbor.

A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Virginia O. Huffman will be held on Friday, December 12, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Wards Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth, with Rev. Roger Hudson officiating. Private Family Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society or the Central Washington Hospital Hospice Fund at 933 Red Apple Rd., Wenatchee, WA 98801. Wards Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
