CAMP HILL, PA-- Robert Stephen Gunderson, 78, of Kenyon, Minn., formerly of Camp Hill-Harrisburg area, died April 19 at University Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn. He was the husband of Evelyn (Danielson) Gunderson, and of the late Stella (Carr) Gunderson. A graveside service, with Military Rites, will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Rolling Green Cemetery, Camp Hill. The Hanson Funeral Home, 514 Third St., Kenyon, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gunderson was born on June 4, 1915, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was the son of the late Oscar Manuel and Anna Marie (Stensland) Gunderson. He was a graduate of Kenyon High School and the Kenyon Norma School. He taught elementary school for several years. An enlistee in the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry, he later was commissioned as a second lieutenant in infantry reserve. He entered the Air Corps in 1941, and served as commander of the camp at Lanesboro, Minn., and later was promoted to major. In 1944, he was assigned to duty in the Pacific area, being promoted to lieutenant colonel. He participated in the assault and occupation phases of the Ryukyuan campaign, landing on the island of Ie Shima. He later served a tour of duty in Shanghai, China. He was moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., for duty at Ent Air Force Base, and later retired from the Air Force. In 1961, he became an editor with the Stackpole Publishing Co., Harrisburg. who published a variety of books and periodicals relating to military, sporting and outdoor topics. He retired from Stackpole in 1975, and later moved to Kenyon. He was active in the Kenyon Meals on Wheels, and belonged to Gol Lutheran Church, the Senior Citizens, the Sons of Norway, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Mr. Gunderson also is survived by a son, Stephen Robert Gunderson of York; two grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Merseth of Zumbrota, Minn.; a stepson, Dennis Danielson of Waukesha, Wis.; six step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
