John Schwieger, 65, of 700 Knight Street in St. Peter, Minnesota died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, at Central Health Center in Le Center. Services are 2 p.m. today at Belgrade Avenue Methodist Church in Mankato with burial in the Morgan Cemetery in Morgan Township, Franklin County, Iowa. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Rob Whipple of Indianola, Iowa; sons and daughters-in-law, Robin and Susan Schwieger of Nicollet, Brad and Dawn Schwieger of Williams, Iowa, Dan Schwieger and Earl Schwieger both of Ames, Iowa; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sandra Schwieger and an infant son. He was born March 20, 1935, in Hampton, Iowa to Howard and Yvonne (Kempthorne) Schwieger. He grew up in the Dows area on the family farm. He attended Dows schools and took courses in agriculture at Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He married Sandra Stephenson on Aug. 3, 1957. He farmed in the Alden, Iowa, area until 1985. After a stay at Iowa State University, they managed motels for Motel 6 until purchasing Americana Motel in Grand Rapids, Minn., which he owned until 1992 when he moved to Nicollet. After being diagnosed with ALS in 1999, he moved to assisted living at The Wilds of Sand Prairie in St. Peter. He moved to the health care center in October. He was a member of Belgrade Avenue Methodist Church in Mankato.
