Richard Charles Carpenter, born April 12, 1916, in Goodell, Iowa, to Alfred and Lyddie Carpenter passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Eureka, on September 14, 2005. An early resident of Shelter Cove, he was a major contributor to the improvements of the District. As a resident for 27 years he was also a local historian. Awarded by the special District of California “Volunteer of the Year”. He was a retired businessman from the San Fernando Valley and he served in the US Navy during World War II. Richard graduated from USC and played pro baseball as a pitcher. A positive and thoughtful man, who knew how to get the job done. He will be greatly missed.

Richard was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Mary Ann Halligan. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carol; son, Bruce (Maxine); daughters, Faye Walzer (Peter), Karen Jameson and Anita Estes; son, Ken (Patty) Jameson; grandchildren, Wes and Eric (Jessica) Leckner, Kimberly (Dave) Williams, Andrea Carpenter, Douglas and Richard Estes, Kendra and Kelly Jameson; great grandchildren, Victoria Leckner and Sean Estes. Memorial services will be held September 23, 2005, at 1:00 P.M. at the Shelter Cove Community Center. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2942 “F” Street, Eureka, CA 95501-4425 in Richard’s name.
