Samuel George Giovenazzo, 85, of Moline, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island. There will be no public visitation. A chapel memorial service with the urn present is being planned for a later date. Inurnment will be with his wife at the New Amsterdam Cemetery in Belmond, Iowa. Garden Ridge Funeral and Cremation Services 2106 7th Ave., Rock Island, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Sam Giovenazzo Memorial Fund.

He was born June 30, 1924, in Silvis, the son of George and Concetta Pollicino Giovenazzo. He married Lavonne I. Christie on Sept. 14, 1946, in East Moline. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served as storekeeper first class aboard the USS Shamrock. He was a 1947 graduate of the Plastics Industries Technical Institute in Los Angeles, Calif. He enjoyed a variety of sports and was a NASCAR fan in his later years. He was a 50-year certified Master Mason and member of the Blue Lodge No. 898. He retired in 1982 as a chief engineer for John Deere Industrial Division in Moline.

Survivors include his son, Michael Alan, Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lavonne in 2002; brothers, Michael James Giovenazzo, Joseph R. (Giovenazzo) Givens I and James Michael Giovenazzo; and a sister in infancy, Baby Catherine.
