Winifred "Winnie" Tanberg, 96, formerly of Iowa City, died Thursday, June 20, 1996, in Lantern Park Care Center, Coralville, following a short illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday, George L. Gay Funeral Home & Crematorium, Iowa City, by the Rev. Bruce Fischer. Burial: Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Survivors include a daughter, Maggie Roth of Washington; a son, Robert Goodnow of Asheville, N.C.; and a sister, Marjorie Carlson of Edina, Minn. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Goodnow of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a niece and several nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, a son and both husbands.

She was born Dec. 26, 1899, in Clarion, the daughter of Henry H. and Minnie Lucas Fritze. Winnie graduated from Clarion High School and attended Grinnell College and the University of Iowa. She worked as a secretary for the U of I Business Office and later at the U of I Psychopathic Hospital. In 1921, she married Donald D. Goodnow in Marion. She later married Clark E. Tanberg in Nashua in 1948. Winnie had been a resident of Lantern Park since 1994, but had lived in the Iowa City area since 1935. She was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa City, T.T.T. Society, University Club, Order of Eastern Star and an alum of Alpha XI Delta sorority. She also was an avid bridge player. Contributions may be made to the Winifred Tanberg Memorial Fund.
