Clair E. Hugh, 80, of Bellevue, Washington passed away peacefully the morning of January 2 at Evergreen Hospital. He had lived a full life despite a quadruple bypass, two kinds of cancer and diabetes. Married for 55 years to Josephine Hugh, he was a great family man and a wise and loving father, grandfather and spouse. He was an active volunteer. An Eagle Scout like two of his sons, he was scoutmaster for Bellevue Troop #653 in the 1970's and also served as a member of the Bellevue School District Advisory Council. He and Jo met as writers for the Iowa State Teachers College newspaper and in their retirement continued writing and working together as editors of the Puget Sound SeniorNet catalog. He was born March 29, 1924 in Delhi, Iowa to Raymond and Marie Hugh. Graduating from Delhi Consolidated School in 1941, he attended Drake University, then enrolled in the Army, serving as a staff sergeant in the signal corps in the Burma/India theater during World War II. He entered Iowa State Teachers College in the fall of 1946 and graduated in May, l948. His first job was as a math and science teacher in the Belmond, Iowa high school where he and Jo both taught. They were married in 1950. Receiving a Master's degree in School Administration in 1953 from the University of Iowa, Clair served as principal of Belmond High School for four years. In 1956, he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and began a career as a loan representative for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee. Transferring to Seattle in l961, he became Regional Manager in l964. He retired in 1984 as a Real Estate Investment Manager. In retirement, he worked for the R. J. Hallissey Company in commercial property sales and in 1991 became a mortgage loan consultant to the Washington State Investment Board and later was an advisory member. Survivors include his 106-year-old mother-in-law, Alta Wiley, his wife, and six sons and daughters and their spouses: Carolyn Miller, Medina; Steve Hugh, Bothell; Jane Marie Brown, Renton; Mark Hugh and Barb Lisaius, Bellevue; also by Robert Hugh of Lusby, Maryland. He also has 13 grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, January 7, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Louise Catholic Church in Bellevue, with viewing at 1:00 p.m. at the church. The family suggests donations to Hopelink, or the American Heart Association.
