Jack was born in Greene, Iowa on Aug. 5, 1929, the second of three children of J.C. "Joe" and Mary Frances (Nettleton) Steinberg. After graduating from Garner High School in 1948, Jack received his graduate and undergraduate degrees from Notre Dame University, Loras College, and Northwest Missouri State University. Jack coached at Melrose, Belmond and Mason City, Iowa. In 1968 he became the Athletic Director at Mason City High School. His passion for developing student athletes contributed to many successful careers including college Division I and the National Football League. In addition to building individuals, Jack led efforts to develop the high school infrastructure, including a new high school football stadium, track and gymnasium. He served as President of the Iowa Athletic Directors Association and was elected to the Iowa Athletic Director Hall of Fame. Jack's devotion went beyond the high school. His servant leadership made him a constant icon at the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. Although a lifelong Midwesterner, Jack's love for the New York Yankees is legendary. He followed every player and every at bat.

Jack is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy (Curran) Steinberg, Mason City; his two daughters, Jill (Rick) Blabolil, Evanston, Ill., Kelly (Mark) Harris, Olathe, Kan.; five granddaughters, Meghan, Molly, Emily and Abby Blabolil, and Taylor Harris; two sisters, Pat Bourk, Leawood, Kan., Jo Neal, Broken Arrow, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law, Judge Curran, Gene Majewski and Bob Neal; and a nephew, Greg Neal. Funeral arrangements are with Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City.
