Clear Lake, IA - Luella Faye Marshall, 92, of 405 27th Avenue S., Clear Lake, died Friday (June 26, 2009) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 30, at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 29, at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Luella was born on July 27, 1916, in Meservey, the daughter of Lewis W. and Lydia (Hoppe) Kennedy. She graduated from Meservey High School in 1933. Luella married Robert Lee Marshall in 1936, in Klemme, and to this union five children were born. Luella and Robert farmed with their family after they were married, and everyone in the family rode and had their own horse. In 1954, Luella and Robert bought the Lighthouse Drive In, which they owned until 1976. In 1962, Luella managed the Clear Lake Sale Barn Cafe until 1976, and then she managed the Garner Sale Barn Cafe until 1986. Luella then worked at the Pronto Gas Station and Kum & Go when she was in her eighties. Luella was famous for her pies and potato salad. She enjoyed traveling, embroidering, horses and dancing, but most of all she loved her family. Luella was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
Luella is survived by her children Marlys (Chuck) Pemble, Everly, Merle (Bev) Marshall, Garner, Marilyn (Jim) Arnold, Mason City, and Mike Marshall, Loveland, Colo., 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; her brother Lloyd (Sally) Kennedy, Clear Lake; and her sisters Lucille Anderson, Clear Lake and Lorene Haddy, Clear Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1959; her son Robert in infancy; two grandchildren; two sisters; one brother and her special friend Pete Bach.
