Lawrence Nels Anderson was born April 25, 1922 in Hawarden, IA to parents Albert and Dora (Christiansen) Anderson. He died June 6, 2009 at his home in Alcester, SD at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 11 days. After the death of his parents he lived with his aunt and uncle, Ludwig and Lena Peterson in Eagle Grove, IA where he attended school. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and entered the United States Navy in 1940, serving 6 years during World War II. He served aboard the U.S.S. Agusta and the U.S.S. Alaska Battle Cruisers. His ship was in the fleet accompanying the U.S.S. Missouri when the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. Lawrence married Carol Ericson on October 25, 1947 in Alcester. They farmed in the area for several years and later moved to Alcester. He worked as a plumber, electrician, at Morningside Manor and as a school bus driver. Lawrence was a member of Nathanael Lutheran Church and the Alcester VFW where he served as Commander. He served on the Alcester City Council and as an EMT for the Alcester Ambulance.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. His survivors include his wife Carol, Alcester; daughter Cynthia (Larry) Madsen, Vermillion; son David Anderson, Sioux Falls; 3 grandchildren: Michelle Madsen (Travis Hinton), Sioux Falls, Jennifer (Jon) Law, Yankton, and Matthew Anderson, San Diego, CA; 3 great grandchildren: Addison and Ayson Anderson and Treyton Law; brother Donald (Mary) Anderson, Madison, WI; special cousins: Marlene Kollias, Sioux Falls and Eleanor Erickson, Cheyenne, WY; special friend Lena Peterson, Alcester; foster grandson Adam Peterson, Alcester; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, June 9 at Nathanael Lutheran Church, Alcester. Visitation will be Monday from 5PM to 8PM with family present from 6:30 to 8:00 and a prayer service at 7:00 at the church. Wass Funeral Home of Alcester is handling arrangements.
