Mason City, IA - Merton Swartwood, 81, of 1024-16th N.E., Mason City, died Friday, August 27, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. There will be no visitation and no service according to his wishes. He died of natural causes. Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E., Mason City is in charge of arrangements.

Merton Swartwood was born in Nora Springs on April 11, 1923, the son of Zaner and Lena (Hemrich) Swartwood. He received his education at a country school in rural Nora Springs. Merton entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after earning the Purple Heart award, three Bronze Stars, and he was also awarded a Combat Infantry Badge. On August 16, 1947, Merton was united in marriage to Bertha Schultz in Nora Springs. They just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Merton farmed several years in Burchinal, Dows, and the Nora Springs area. After farming he worked at various jobs including Eliason Salvage Yard, the Town of Nora Springs, Allied Construction, Andrews Redi-Mix, and River City Redi-Mix. In 1991, he sold his home in Nora Springs and moved to Rudd. In 1992, he moved to Mason City and resided there until his death. Merton was known for his Christian values and morals.

Left to cherish his memories is his wife Bertha Swartwood of Mason City, two daughters Evelyn (Pat) Kisner of San Diego, CA, Kathy Butner of Mason City; three sons Steve (Sue) Swartwood of Mason City, Thomas Swartwood of Poincian, FL, Gary (Sue) Swartwood of Mason City; 13 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Merton is also survived by his two sisters Dottie Roberts of Stevenson, WA, and Glea (Bill) Scholten of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and Arlin Swartwood, and one sister, Lorette Julien. Condolences may be sent to 1024 16th N.E. Mason City, Iowa.
