Mason City – Bertha D. Swartwood, 80, of 1024 16th St. NE, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at First Assembly of God Church, 1301 Carolina Ave N. with Reverend Clyde Harvey officiating. Inurnment will be in the Spring Grove Cemetery near Nora Springs.
Bertha Dorothea Swartwood was born on November 5, 1926 to Ernest and Dorothea (Schwade) Schultz in Nora Springs. She graduated from Nora Springs High School and furthered her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City. After college she was employed at the Iowa Insurance Company for 2 years. Bertha was united in marriage to Merton Swartwood on August 16, 1947 in Nora Springs. Bertha and Merton farmed for several years in the Burchinal, Dows and Nora Springs areas. In 1961 the couple moved into Nora Springs, where she enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. In 1991 they sold their home in Nora Springs and moved to Rudd. In 1992 they moved to Mason City. Merton died in 2004. She was known for her Christian values of caring and giving. Bertha enjoyed playing cards, playing the organ and piano and visiting with friends. Her greatest joy was caring for her family.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Evelyn (Pat) Kisner of San Diego, CA; and Kathy Butner of Mason City; three sons, Steve (Sue) Swartwood of Mason City; Thomas Swartwood of Crystal River, FL; and Gary (Sue) Swartwood of Mason City; 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by 2 sisters, Rosie Lee and Erma (Gary) Peterson both of Mason City; and 2 brothers, Albert Schultz of Rockford; and Fred (Margaret) Schultz of Mason City. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herman Schultz. Condolences may be sent to the Swartwood Family at 1213 N. Hampshire Place, Mason City, IA 50401.
