Maureen "Mollie" Lucy Nichols, age 60, died Thurs-day, September 13, 2001, from complications following heart surgery. A funeral Mass was held Monday, September 17 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with Rev. David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Maxine Whitty was organist, Cyndy McNulty was cantor, Mary Ann Spitler was lector, and Kim Swart Roush was soloist. Eucharistic ministers were Sharon Johnson, Regina Lamoureux, Veronica Benetti, and Sandy Anderson. Ushers were Kenny Bock and Kevin Ketchum. Casket bearers were Rob Courson, Tom Best, Gary Groves, Jim Chelesvig, Larry Flanagan and Ryan Groves. Honorary bearers were Caye Chelesvig, Julie Best, Linda Groves, Shari Kinseth, Sharon Wright and Veronica Benetti. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Belmond.

Mollie, the daughter of William and Marian Mahedy, was born Sept. 8, 1941, in Des Moines. She attended St. Augustine grade school and St. Joseph's Academy. She later attended Dueschene Academy for women and Creighton University in Omaha, NE, where she met her husband, Howard, of nearly 38 years. Mollie and Howard made their first home in Omaha where their first two children, Bibiana and Tammara, were born. They later moved to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, where their third child, Michael, was born. They made their home in Belmond in 1969. Her last two children, Shannon and Christopher, were born in Belmond. Mollie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to read, play bridge and travel. In recent years she was Coordinator of Religious Education at St. Francis Xavier Church.

Mollie was preceded in death by her father, William Mahedy, and a brother, B. Patrick Mahedy. Survivors include: her husband, Howard; daughters, Bibiana Wiley, her husband Hunter, and their child Quint of Charlotte, NC; Tammara Nichols of Boulder, CO; and Shannon Nichols and her daughter Michaeline of Des Moines; sons, Michael Nichols, his wife Jolene, and their child Christian of Estherville, IA; and Christopher Nichols of Boulder, CO; her mother Marian Mahedy of Des Moines; sisters, Sally Davenport of Menlo Park, CA; and Mary Lou Murray of Durango, CO; and brother A. Dennis Mahedy and his wife Sherri of Charlotte, NC.
