October 26, 1912 - October 27, 2008

DOWS, IA—Oscar Leo Sporaa, 96, of Dows, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2008, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 30, at the Ewing Funeral Home in Clarion, with Pastor Martha Bennett officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Oscar, the son of Henry and Olga (Braun) Sporaa, was born on October 26, 1912 in Alexander. He grew up in the Alexander area where he attended country school. Oscar served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was united in marriage with Grace Rubendall on July 2, 1943, in Manchester, Tennessee. Oscar and Grace made their home in Dows for 59 years. Oscar was a self-employed gravel hauler and worked for Toft Sand and Gravel and also owned the DX Station in Dows. Oscar enjoyed working with his hands, he constructed their home by himself using ammo boxes and converted a bus into a camper. He also built a car for Jerry to race in Rowan and enjoyed being part of the pit crew. He loved spending time with his grandchildren go-cart racing and fishing.

Oscar is survived by his children, Jerry of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, David (Marie) of Iowa Falls, Linda (Lonnie) Christensen of Popejoy and Brenda Ammerman of Dows; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lena Gordon of Cambridge, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace; infant son, Terry; and two brothers.
