Ada M. Hughes, 87, of Clear Lake, died Thursday, July 19, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. A memorial service was held on Monday, July 23, at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake with Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment was on Monday, July 23, in the Belmond Cemetery near Belmond.

Ada M. Shahan was born February 2, 1914, near Belmond, the daughter of Lee and Mary (Carter) Shahan. She received her education in the rural county schools at Belmond Township School District #4. On November 24, 1934, Ada was united in marriage to Weston D. Hughes in Clarion. The couple made their home in the rural Belmond area. They were parents of 11 children. On June 16, 1944, Ada was baptized at the Goodell United Methodist Church in Goodell. Ada was a cook at Jim's Tap in Clear Lake and worked at Olaf T. Hansen's in Clear Lake until her retirement in March, 1984.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Lola Mae; four grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brothers, Harry, Carroll, Howard, Edwin and Stanley; sister, Lola; and two sons-in-law, Larry Pals and Kyle Mennenga. Survivors include ten children and their spouses: Lee W. Hughes of Clear Lake, Gary D. and Jo Hughes of Peoria, AZ, Barbara K. Pals of Shakopee, MN, Lyle H. and Margaret Hughes of Marion, Virginia E. Mennenga of Hubbard, Linda C. and Gene Helland of Storm Lake, Darwin R. and Joanne Hughes of Woodbury, MN, Keith D. and Suzette Hughes of Trusdale, Paul K. and Judy Hughes of Parkersburg, and Rebecca J. and Steven Frerichs of Steamboat Rock; 27 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Orville and Micky Shahan of Mesa, AZ; sister-in-law, Dorothy Shahan of Colstrip, MT, Gladys Pals of Belmond, Irene Shahan of Mason City, and Ardie Shahan; brother-in-law, Pete Pals of Belmond; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Phyllis Hughes of Clear Lake.
