Merle Benton (Shorty) Peterson, 82, Waverly, died November 2, 2004 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Services were held November 6 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with burial in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Merle was born January 23, 1922 in Kanawha, the son of Emil and Della (Hayden) Peterson. His mother was killed when he was a child and he moved to Minnesota. He served in the Navy during WWII and then moved to Waverly. He married Alverta Nolte at the E.U.B. Church in Goodell in 1954. He worked for a crane company and ran his own landscaping business in Waverly. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors are his wife; daughter Julie (Richard) Westin of Waterloo; son Kevin Peterson of Spirit Lake; and brothers Walton (Verna) Peterson of Rochester and Arthur (Alta) Peterson of Fort Dodge.
