June 23, 2000Viola Ruth Morris, 85, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment was at Belmond Cemetery near Belmond. Music was provided by Carol Severson, organist; Marilyn Janssen, vocalist. Ushers were Glenn Meints and Larry Larson. Honorary casket bearers were Loren Bamford, Duncan Campbell, Wallace "Soupy" Cramer, Lawrence Ziller, Alvin Dorenkamp, and Gilman Soma. Casket bearers were Robert Morris, Daniel Morris, Michael Kelly, Ryan Pross, Mark Galloway, Cory Morris, Jon Alexandres, and Daniel Nisley.
Viola Soma, daughter of Elling and Anna (Michaelson) Soma was born June 1, 1915, at home near Kanawha. She was baptized at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on August 1, 1915, and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on July 13, 1930. She attended country school near Kanawha and graduated from Belmond High school with the class of 1933. She was united in marriage to Francis L. Morris on September 14, 1938, and to this union three children were born. Viola loved to garden and bake. Her specialty being Kringla. Later in life, she learned to sew, knit and make quilts. Viola was very active in Trinity Lutheran Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; two grandsons, Chad Morris and Jon Morris; four brothers; and three sisters. Survivors are her husband, Francis of Belmond; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Sherry Morris of Belmond; daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Craig Pross of Mason City; son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and DeLores Morris of Belmond; eight grandchildren, Robert and Jennifer Morris of Des Moines, Sonya and Daniel Nisley of Gilman, Laurie and Mark Galloway of Eagan, MN, Leanne and Jon Alexandres of Eagan, MN, Joelyn and Michael Kelly of Eagan, MN, Ryan Pross and his fiance, Angela Beeman of Mason City, Cory and Linda Morris of Iowa City, and Daniel Morris of Belmond; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor Morris, Kyle and Jason Nisley, Meghan and Benja.
