Clara Smith, 79, Eagle Grove, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at the Southfield Wellness Community at Webster City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with Rev. David Beckman, Celebrant. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Webster City. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Clara Irene Coddington, daughter of Burdette and Frances Maier Coddington, was born Jan. 21, 1925 at Eagle Grove. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School until 8th grade and graduated from the Eagle Grove high school in 1943. During World War II, she worked at a defense plant at Des Moines and at a department store in Chicago. On Feb. 22, 1946, she married Claude (Bill) C. Smith at Eagle Grove. The couple resided at Webster City. She was a homemaker until the children had all left home. She then worked for the Freeman Journal, American Family and Naden Industries. They moved to Eagle Grove in 1997. She had only resided at Southfield for 6 days.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Bill; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Linda Smith of Norwalk; Jeff and Lynn Smith of Eagle Grove; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Dr. Randy Nelson of Paynesville, Minn.; grandchildren, Denise Britson Tamse; Bruce Britson Jr., Nicholas Nelson, Carrie Smith Waldeier; Jessica Smith; Jody Lundy and Andrew Lowe; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Kvale of Eagle Grove; several nieces, nephews and cousins; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Jerry Smith of Webster City; Wayne Smith of Utah. Her parents and brothers, Leonard, Gene and Harold Kist and two in infancy preceded her in death. She was a longtime member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church at Webster City and for the past 7 years was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Eagle Grove, Catholic Daughters of America and was very active in her church. She loved to travel with her husband, was an avid bridge player, liked to dance, but most of all, she loved spending time with her loving family.
