In Memoriam
Awanda Nowatzki
Worthy Grand Matron
2001-2002It is with deep sorrow we announce the death of Sister Awanda Nowatzki, Past Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of North Dakota, 2001-2002. Sister Awanda passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND. Her funeral service was held on Friday, March 6 at the First United Methodist Church in Jamestown. An Eastern Star Funeral Service was given by members of Woodbine #4 and Bismarck #12. Burial will be at the Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown, Wisconsin.
Sister Awanda was born February 27, 1937 in Hardy, Iowa to Howard and Grace Ostrem. She attended high school in Little Falls, MN, attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL and the University of Florida at Coral Gables, FL. She married Fred Westphal in 1955 and they had two sons, Eric and Kevin. In 1982, Sister Awanda married James Nowatzki. He has a son, Derek. Together, they co-owned "Officeland" in Jamestown, ND where Sister Awanda was responsible for the accounting work at the store for many years. Her journey in the Order of the Eastern Star started on October 12, 1987 when she was initiated into Lady Washington Chapter #1, Jamestown, ND. She became Worthy Matron in 1992 and then was Secretary of that Chapter until they merged with Woodbine #4, Valley City, ND. In 1998 she was elected as Associate Grand Conductress of the Grand Chapter of North Dakota and began her journey to the Grand East. She became Worthy Grand Matron in 2001 along with Brother John Welsch as her Worthy Grand Patron. Sister Awanda's symbol was angels, and she is certainly among them right now. Her fun symbol was the Leprechaun and Brother John had the Walleye and they had a lot of good times with these. Sister Awanda had a field trip during her year to the Red Bird Mission in Kentucky. Several ND members went with on this journey and roughed it in cabins at the mission, worked out in the area with residents that needed work done and attended devotions every evening. Most everyone enjoyed the trip and Sister Awanda was so proud to have done this. She and Brother John held their "A Little Bit of Heaven" Session in Fargo, ND on June 10-12, 2002. Sister Awanda was active in her community as well. She served on the Alfred Dickey Library Board for six years, the Stutsman County Memorial Museum, the Salvation Army and was in Kiwanis. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Jamestown and was chairman of Missions for many years. The Grand Chapter of North Dakota extends deepest sympathy to her husband Jim; two sons, Eric (Patricia) Westphal, Ireland and Kevin (Kristin) Westphal, Cedarburg, WI; stepson, Derek (Amy) Nowatzki, Mableton, Georgia; three grandsons and two granddaughters, and to the Sister's and Brother's of Woodbine #4 who mourn her. In loving memory, we request this memorial be read at the first stated meeting of the Chapter and the charter be draped for 30 days in her memory.
