29 August 1927 -- 19 October 1993

YUMA, Ariz. — Jim Deyo, a former Oelwein resident, died Tuesday afternoon after a battle with lung cancer. He was 66. Deyo is survived by a son, Jeffrey William Deyo, El Centre; three daughters: Christine Deyo Ward, Boulder City, Nev.; Rebecca Deyo, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Jamie Deyo Horton, Mesa; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Carol Deyo Avery, Phoenix. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Marie (Tootie) Knapp Deyo, also a former Oelwein resident, who died in February 1986; his parents, the late E.E. Deyos; two brothers, Earl, and Dan, and a sister, Winifred. Although funeral arrangements are still being finalized, tentative plans include funeral services at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church with visitation tentatively scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ryzek Yuma Mortuary. Before the Deyos moved to Yuma 30 years ago, be taught school and coached basketball and baseball in Iowa. He taught at Kofa High School for. 27 years, retiring in 1990. Deyo, born Aug. 29, 1927 in Clarion, was a 1946 graduate of Oelwein High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was active in politics in Yuma and had served as mayor from 1978 to 1981. He served on the city council from 1967 to 1985. He was named Yuma County Man of the Year in 1972 and in i960 was given the Distinguished Service Award from the League of Arizona Cities and Towns for his years as a government official. He was instrumental in getting the Yuma Civic and Convention Center built. During his term as mayor, the city annexed the Yuma International Airport to protect it and the Marine Corps Air Station from residential encroachment. He also worked to keep the Main Street post office open.
