PIERSON, Iowa --Erwin A. Karsten, 94, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Pierson, died Friday, April 16, 1999, at Springdale Extended Care Nursing Home in Mesa. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Correctionville, Iowa, with the Rev. Scott Meier officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Pierson. Visitation will be 10 a.m. Friday until service time at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.

Mr. Karsten was born June 19, 1904, in Renwick, Iowa, the son of Albert and Helene Karsten. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He married Mildred Puttmann on Nov. 24, 1924. They owned Karsten Implement Co. in Pierson for many years. He was later involved in the baking industry. In 1963, the couple moved to Sterling, Colo. and wintered in Mesa. In 1981, they moved permanently to Mesa. She died March 27, 1997. He enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and swimming. Survivors include a daughter, Lorna H. Wissink of Waverly, Iowa and Mesa; a son and his wife, Myron and Ginette of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a sister, Esther Karsten of Waverly; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Roesener of Rockville, Md., and Ella Elser of Pierson; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Memorials may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville.
