Dayrl Owen Newman, 79, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Sioux City. Services will be 11:30 a.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Kevin Lee of Morningside Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Newman was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Ray Allen and Eva (Deppe) Newman. He attended Sioux City schools, graduating in 1940 from Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, as a noncommissioned officer with the Armored Force, 3rd Army. He married Della Mae Hanson on July 30, 1945, in Mapleton, Iowa. He was employed with Iowa Public Service for 33 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of American Legion Monahan Post 64 and enjoyed gardening and sports.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sharon Harris and her fiance, Dennis Kowalski of St. Cloud, Minn., and Sheila and her husband, Richard Peterson of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Ray and Anne and Michael and Sherry, all of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Donald and Elsie of Smithland, Iowa; a sister, Alma Stekelenburg of Grove, Okla.; eight grandchildren, David, Edward and Sarah Harris, Shannon, Ryan, Christopher, Dayrl and Aaron Newman; four stepgrandchildren, Valerie Celene, Richard, Cynthia and Elizabeth Peterson; three great-grandchildren; and seven great-stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
