Fort Dodge Messenger, IowaPatrick Porter, 76, of Fort Dodge, died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Careage in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 26th in the chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn, Iowa with military graveside rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Surviving is his wife Grace; a sister, Sara Stark and her husband Bob of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Loretta and Paul Johnson of Des Moines; cousin, Robert Snyder of Fullerton, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Patrick Francis Porter was born July 31, 1932 in Clarion, Iowa. He was the son of Francis Leo Porter and Genevieve Doherty Porter. Pat attended St. John's Catholic School and graduated from Clarion High School in 1950. He attended Loras College in Dubuque for one year before entering the Army. He served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge he then enrolled at the University of South Dakota where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. After graduating from USD, he began teaching school in Colorado. While in Colorado, he attended Colorado State Teachers College at Greeley, receiving his Master of Arts in Education. While in Colorado, Pat began working in the Insurance business. He eventually re-located to Fort Dodge as an Independent Insurance Agent and had his own agency until he retired. In June 1970, he was united in marriage to Norma Jean Arndorfer at St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion, Iowa. Norma Jean died in 1972. In July, 1973, Pat married Grace Husmann in Fort Dodge where they continued to make their home. Pat's passion was playing golf, was a member of the Fort Dodge Noon Lions Club, and a past member of the Knights of Columbus Council 613. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
