CAPE GIRARDEAU - Florence (Mitchell) Rossiter, 99, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in Christ Episcopal Church in Cape Girardeau, with the Revs. Robert Towner and Michael Fender officiating. Interment will be on a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Chateau Girardeau Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice. Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge of arrangements.
Florence was born Feb. 18, 1909, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Sample Cooper and Harriett Ann (Fothergill) Mitchell. She married Dr. Lewis James Rossiter on July 19, 1933, in Oak Park; he preceded her in death Feb. 11, 1984. Florence was raised in Eagle Grove and was a graduate of Eagle Grove High School. She moved to Chicago to train as a nurse. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1931 from West Suburban School of Nursing. In 1953, she and her husband, Lewis, moved to Carbondale, where they raised a son and daughter. Lewis was a pathologist at Carbondale Clinic. In 1979, they moved to Cape Girardeau. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and P.E.O. in Cape Girardeau.
She is survived by one son, James M. Rossiter (wife, Judith) of Carbondale; one daughter, Nancy Rossiter Sato (husband, Hiroaki) of New York City; grandson, James K. Rossiter, and stepgrandson, Robert T. Gallegly (Karen) all of Carbondale; stepgranddaughter, Elizabeth Gallegly Fender (Rev. Michael) of Jacksonville; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents.
