Donald Harold Hanus was born April 5, 1927, the son of August and Ethel Johnson Hanus in rural Wright County near Woolstock. He received his education in a rural school near Woolstock, and attended the Webster City school system. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 18. During his tour of duty he was stationed in Japan, where he attended administrative clerical school in Tokyo for eight weeks. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal.

He was united in marriage to Marie Kepler of Webster City on March 1, 1948, at Webster City. He was employed with Millard Hurt Construction of Woolstock, and later worked in various jobs including Peoples Natural Gas, Wilhelm Foundery, Wilhelmson Engineering, Beam Manufacturing, and Morton's Food, all of Webster City. In recent years, he has owned and operated his own salvage company east of Eagle Grove. He was a member of the Ban de La Rouche, of Woolstock.

Donald Harold Hanus died Wednesday, August 19, 1992 at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames following an extended illness, at the age of 65 years, four months, and 14 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Emil, Raynor, and Robert; and two sisters, Dorothy Connors and Norma Capelo. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Donald of Goldfield, Ronald of Webster City, and Mike of Eagle Grove; one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Rita) Markwardt of Story City; four brothers, Dean, Webster City, Harold of Carroll, Gary of Riley, Kan., and Melvin of Webster City; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 21 at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with the Rev. Ronald Feuerhak officiating at the 10:30 a.m. services. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
