Calvin E. Packard, 80, of Fort Madison, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at his home. Born Aug. 30, 1923, in Renwick, he was the son of Harry H. and Ruth K. Obermeier Packard. On June 20, 1943, he married Carol K. Holverson in Little Rock, Ark. Mr. Packard served in the Army as a staff sergeant during World War II. He owned and operated Urick Implement in Garner. He later owned and operated Downtown Plymouth in Mason City and was a pilot and instructor for Dwyer Aircraft in Mason City. He also owned and operated A & W in Fort Madison for 10 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and was a 50–year member of Claypoole Masonic Lodge 13 AF & AM. He loved fly fishing.
Survivors include his wife of Fort Madison; two sons, Paul Packard and Brent Packard, both of Fort Madison; one daughter, Faith Smith of Niota, Ill.; eight grandchildren; seven great–grandchildren; one brother, Keith Packard of Palm Desert, Calif.; one sister, Joyce Scott of Auburn, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and one great–grandson.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Packard will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at King–Lynk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brenda Goodall officiating. Burial will be in Soldiers Circle in Oakland Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
