Ca. December 1893

Barbara, wife of Wm Hatt, died Dec. 11, 1893. She was born in Gratton, Kent Co, Michigan April 10, 1851. In 1853 her father Henry Luick emigrated with his family to Iowa, settling at Belmond, Wright Co. Thus Mrs. Hatt was one of the early pioneers who suffered the privations that necessarily fall to the lot of those brave ones who prepared the way for those who followed. She moved with her mother to Michigan in 1865, where the year following, she was married to Wm. Hatt of Sylvan Mich. In 1880 she returned to Belmond accompanied by her husband and children and has resided here since that time. The deceased leaves a husband and 4 children - Mrs. Blakewell, James, Louis, and little Maud, a baby of two and a half years. Death was caused from a complication of diseases, especially heart trouble brought on by a severe attack of La Grippe. Her friends have lost a most valuable helper, one ever ready to lend a helping hand, or give a word of sympathy to those in need or in trouble; while her own immediate family have lost a loving wife and mother, whose first thought was for the comfort of those she loved. Especially will her loss be sadly felt by her aged father, who still survives her and whose declining days were being brightened by her tender administrations.
