Pioneer Settler Called
Resident This Locality Forty-three Years Answers Final Summons

John O'Neill passed away on Sunday evening, July 27th, at his old home four miles south of Clarion after a short illness with an attack of appendicitis. Mr. O'Neill had been in his usual health till Friday evening when he complained of not feeling well. A doctor was called and his condition was not considered serious until Sunday noon when he grew rapidly worse. His relatives from out of town were notified but they were unable to reach his bedside before the final summons came.

Mr. O'Neill was born in Crossmaglen, County Armagh, Ireland, April 6th, 1843. At the age of eighteen he came to New York state and worked in the mines of New York and Michigan for several years. During this time he made three visits to his native land. On January 30, 1870, he was united in marriage with Mary McGinn at Port Henry, New York. To this union were born eight children, all of whom survive except one son who died when two years of age. One brother and one sister are also living in Ireland.

Mr. O'Neill came to Iowa on March 6, 1876, and located in Wright County on the farm which has been his home till the time of his death. Mr. O'Neill was a man of a very happy disposition with a kind word for everybody, always ready to help those who needed assistance. He will be greatly missed by his devoted wife and family, also by his neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Church Wednesday at nine o'clock, conducted by Father Murphy of Mason City, after which, followed by a large concourse of friends, the remains were laid away in the Catholic cemetery. The Monitor joins with friends in extending sympathy to the family in their bereavement.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Margaret Cull and O.T. Cull of Chicago, Owen O'Neill of Anaconda, Montana, Kathryn McGinn of Waverly, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Ascherel of Duncombe, Iowa, Thomas Trowbridge of Dows, Iowa, Miss Mary Mariga and George Shauley of Webster City.
