Former Resident Dies in Minnesota
Death came to Mrs. Henry H. Smidt at 5:10 a. m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at her farm home two miles southeast of New Richland, Minn., following five years of illness from arthritis and a year of suffering from carcinoma of the stomach. Had she lived until Nov. 30, she would have observed her 64th birthday anniversary.
Agnes Mary Johnson was born at Piper City, Illinois, Nov. 30, 1890, a daughter to the late John and Agnes Johnson. When she was ten years old the family moved to a farm northwest of Kanawha, Iowa. There she grew to womanhood. On December 20, 1916, she was united in marriage to Henry H. Smidt, also of the Kanawha vicinity, in a double wedding ceremony performed at the parental Johnson home. The other couple being her sister Ethel (now deceased) and Wm. Raymond Morris. Mr. and Mrs. Smidt farmed in the Britt-Kanawha vicinity until March, 1937, when they moved to the New Richland, Minn. community where they spent the intervening 17 years farming. Two sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Smidt, Alfred who is married and lives in the New Richland vicinity, and Dale who died in infancy. Others surviving besides the husband and son are one sister, Mrs. Omer Amonson, Eagle Grove, Iowa; and five brothers: J. B. Johnson, Britt; William Johnson, Callender; and Wendell, Alvin and Lawrence Johnson, all of Kanawha. Two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Morris and Mrs. Eliza (Melvin) Hill preceded her in death.
Funeral services were conducted from the Freeborn Funeral Home, Albert Lea, Tuesday, Nov. 9th at 1 p. m., and at the St. Peter's Lutheran church in New Richland at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Wm. F. Lehmann in charge. Burial was in St. Peter's cemetery at New Richland. Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, and nieces were in charge of the flowers. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Nock, the latter an aunt, from Lennox, S. D., were at the funeral as well as relatives from Britt, Kanawha, Callender, Eagle Grove. Andrew, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Nora Springs and Austinville. all in Iowa, and Okabena and Brewster, Minn.
