MESERVEY - William George Vierkant Sr., 83, of Meservey, died Sunday (Oct. 31, 1999) at the Belmond Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment will be in the Alexander Cemetery, Alexander. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

William George Vierkant Sr., the son of George and Dena (Beenen) Vierkant, was born Oct. 15, 1916, on the family farm in Wisner Township, rural Franklin County. He attended country school in Wisner Township. Bill graduated from catechism in the First Reformed Church in Meservey. On Dec. 11, 1937, William was united in marriage to Henrietta Meinders at the First Reformed Church parsonage in Meservey. The couple made their home and raised their family on the same family farm in Wisner Township where William was born. He farmed there until he retired in 1980 and lived there his entire life. Some of the things that William enjoyed were gardening and fishing, but farming was always No. 1 with him. He thoroughly enjoyed work and he was good at it. William loved his family dearly and he always liked to take them on an annual family vacation. Christmas was a special time, too, as it was the only time the whole family got together - and the farming was all done! He cherished his family completely and adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Henrietta, of rural Meservey; three daughters, Marianne Payne and her husband, Loren, of Belmond, Betty DeVries and her husband, Robert, of Moorhead, Minn., and Darcy Kolb, of Clear Lake and her special friend, Art Niles, of Iona; one son, William Vierkant Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Alexander; nine grandchildren, Lonnie Payne, LeAnn Tindall, Denby DeVries, Korly DeVries, Bridget Kolb, Danielle Naumann, Juliet Kolb, Dillon Vierkant and Marissa Vierkant; five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Kayla and Danika Tindall, Coragan Duncklee and Nicholas Naumann; and two sisters, Herma Lauren and her husband, Andrew, of Meservey, and Anna Nordman and her husband, Vic, of Meservey. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Theodore Vierkant and Herman Vierkant; two sisters, Alice (Mrs. Theo) Dirks and Wilma (Mrs. Lambert) Pals; and one adopted sister, Sina (Mrs. John) Wenzel. Tenold Funeral Home.
