ALEXANDER - Merlin Lloyd Bier, 80, of Alexander lost his battle with cancer Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. A memorial service was held Friday, July 11, at the First Reformed Church in Alexander with burial planned at the Alexander Cemetery at a later date. Rev. Philip Arnold officiated.
Merlin was born in Franklin County April 25, 1923, to Arthur and Ruth (Halfpop) Bier. He graduated from Meservey Consolidated Schools in 1940. On Jan. 23, 1944, he married Arlene Schulte at Alexander. Merlin was a farmer, electrician, mechanic, tiler, plumber, carpenter, landscaper, welder and machinist. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Alexander. He was also a member of the Masons, Za-Ga-Zig Shriners, Blacksmith and Welders Association, and BPOE. He was a school board member, coached little league, bowled and pitched for the town softball team. He enjoyed golf and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene; two daughters, Susan of Williamsburg and Jerilyn and husband Delos Hansen of Bettendorf; two sons, David of Des Moines and Loren and wife D.J. of Alexander; five granddaughters; and a sister, Frances Dorenkamp of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home of Hampton is in charge of the arrangements.
