LATIMER, IA - LaVern Paul Ernst Hopkey, 88, of Latimer died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton. Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer with Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial was in the Marion Center Cemetery, rural Latimer.
LaVern was born Aug. 3, 1915, to George and Louise (Meyer) Hopkey in Meservey. He attended school in rural Meservey. On Feb. 5, 1941, he was united in marriage to Clara Mae Blom at Coulter. They couple farmed in the area until 1976, at which time they retired and moved to Latimer. LaVern was a 50-year member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, serving on the Men's Fellowship Committee and as past Deacon. He enjoyed bowling, yard work, playing cards and cribbage.
Survivors include his wife, Clara; two sons, Larry E. Hopkey and wife Virgene of Albert Lea, Minn., and Edward D. Hopkey and wife Marylin of Storm Lake; two granddaughters, Allison Fullenkamp and husband John of Troy, Ohio, and Angie Hopkey of Coralville; and one great-grandson, Jonah Fullenkamp of Troy. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home of Latimer was in charge of arrangements.
