WISHEK, ND -- Solomon 'Sully' Hochhalter, 84, Wishek, died Jan. 11, 2003, at a Wishek hospital, due to Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ, Wishek, with the Rev. Tammy Toepke-Floyd officiating. Burial will be in Wishek City Cemetery.

Sully was born Feb. 24, 1918, in McIntosh County, the son of Henry J. and Magdalina (Staebler) Hochhalter. He attended the Wishek Public School. He entered the United States Army and was inducted March 20, 1941, in Fargo. He served in the Company M 63rd Infantry Division. He served in the Pacific Theater during which he was awarded the Purple Heart and Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star. He received the awards of Expert Rifle Marksman, Carbine Combat, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal and Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. Following his discharge on Oct. 26, 1945, from Fort Lewis, Wash., he returned home and farmed with his father.

He and Jonna Helene Wishek were married Oct. 21, 1956, at Kanawha, Iowa. They made their home in Wishek. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, owned Sully's Lounge, managed Wishek Concrete Products and Lumber Co., and also worked for D and A Lounge. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Reformed Church, serving as secretary and treasurer. He was also a member of United Church of Christ, Wishek, the Fred Kelly American Legion Post No. 87, VFW, the Wishek Eagles D.A.V., Wishek Drum and Bugle Corp., Wishek Lions and the Wishek Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Jonna, Wishek; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gale (Craig) Nies, Dundee, Ore., and Karen (Roger) Skarp, Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren, Amanda Lillian Nies and Carrie Annetta Nies, Emily Ashley Lane, Elliot Farley Lane and Thomas Patrick Skarp; and one brother, William (Violet) Hochhalter, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents. Haut Funeral Home, Wishek
