HAWKEYE, IA - Funeral services for Melvin Eugene Eliason will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, with the Rev. Troy Pflibsen officiating. Burial will be in Lost Grove Cemetery, rural Harcourt, with military graveside rites performed by the Hawkeye and Harcourt American Legions. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Hawkeye, and for one hour before services at the church Wednesday.
Mr. Eliason, 70, died at his home early Sunday morning, Aug. 10, 1997, from complications of A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was born July 14, 1927, near Kanawha, rural Hancock County, the son of Elmer and Mabel Tegland Eliason. He graduated from Kanawha High School in 1945. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Jan. 15, 1953, he married Nellie DeWaard at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Mr. Eliason worked in and managed co-ops in Kanawha, Harcourt, Gowrie, Pella and Hawkeye, where be retired in 1989. For the past five years, he has worked as Fayette County Disaster Director. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where be held several church offices. He did volunteer work for Heart of Iowa Hospice and several other community organizations. He was a longtime American Legion member in many of the communities in which be lived.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie; four sons, Douglas (Lavonne) of Salem, Ore., Steve (Anita) of West Branch, Jim of Cedar Rapids, and Rich of Des Moines; two daughters, Mickey Eliason of Iowa City and Julie (Kevin) Thompson of Des Moines; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Cecil Eliason and Larry Eliason, both of Kanawha. He was preceded in death by one son, Randy; his parents; and four brothers, Ernest, Donald and Robert Eliason, and Ed Tegland.
